Vlad Getman Tops Felix Schwarz Memorial; Jerry Zhang Tops Elders

Vladimir Getman cruised to victory in the Felix Schwarz Memorial played at the CLC Charter School on National Chess Day, October 14. With his score nicked only by a draw with expert Eugene Furman, Vlad secured clear first place with 3.5 points.

 

Robizon Khubulashvili and junior Jerry Zhang tied for the second and third place spots with 3.0 points each. Robizon's sole loss was to Vlad, while Jerry's loss was to Jeff Hoskavich who was rated over 700 points higher than Jerry. After that first-round loss, Jerry won three straight, including two upsets over higher-rated players. In addition to sharing the second and third place prize money, Jerry was awarded the trophy for highest-scoring K-8 player. Meanwhile, Robizon scored an upset over Eugene (rated over 300 points higher) in the last round to secure the tie with Jerry.

 

The first and second place U1600 prizes were won by Eric Holecko and John Murray, respectively.
